If you call just 2 couples your task is easier. The little rule I made was when you hear a command it is a situation of "If you can" and no phantom spot. Example...

Call any material that can be done from 2 couples from the set-up above you can achieve lines of 3 facing with A-Trd- &Roll Warning! you can get in some strange dancer arrangements. Like 2 boys and 1 girl in one line. Don't panic a star thru will give a setup with are least 2

Note : I started with couples 1,3 and 4 You can start with 4,1 and 2 Here is a routine example

The following assume #3 position is vacant...
S-LeadR TrdBy TrdBy TrdBy "those who can" Cir2L, O-WhlAr CirL AL RLG (always 6 hands)
#1 "go down the middle" SepA1 "Lines of 3" FwdBk T1/4 Col.C (etc.)
3LChn (Ladies leave their partner pass one guy and courtesy turn with the next)

The following make use of the phantom couple...
H-LeadR A-VeerL Cpl.C BendL RLT PasTh BendLine (etc.)
     S-StrTh DPT Clovr (etc.)
     SFGrSqr

I will call lots of stuff in which the phantoms are significant and then not. I direct the dancers with qualifiers like "those who can" (no phantom) and "everybody" (dance with the phantom if you have to). I use directional stuff "the boy facing out turn back" "everybody holding a right hand" do something.

I call several contra triples. (Those of you familiar with some of the older dances may remember a square dance figure in which one couple leads to the right for a "duck and dive" - a sequence of dive thrus - one of my contras uses that figure.)

(advanced) ALTAT A-"1/3 Thru" (centers turn R 1/3, everybody L 1/2) Left 1/4 Thru to Alamo Style...

    [From Al Brozek]--------------------------------------------------------

Have couples stand in a 'U' formation, that is, couples in 4th, 3rd, and 2nd square positions. I told them that they would NOT be working with a ghost couple. A 'rule' that I made up was that when they were facing out where a couple was supposed to be, they should CalTw automatically. With this setup, when I would call something like S-SqTh4. Gent 4 and lady 2 would end up facing couple 3 ready to do some 2-couple figures. Gent 2 and lady 4 would end facing out where couple 1 would have been--if there had been a couple 1--and they would then automatically CalTw and wait. When I finished my 2 couple figures, I'd have one of these couples move across the square to the 2 people who were in #1 position (gent 2, lady 4) and do more 2 couple stuff.

You always want something that looks like this:

        v v
      > <
      > <

       Heads

       CALLER

You just want different people to be in different positions for variety.
JoinH CirL ... "#1 you're Heads, others fall in"
    gives...

         #1
         v v
       > <
    #2 > < #3

    ...or...

JoinH CirL ... "#3 you're Heads, others fall in"
    gives...

         #3
         v v
       > <
    #1 > < #2

and so on. You could do the same thing with the sides if you used some landmark in the room.
